Introduction

“During the 1980’s, the contemporary Chinese art world underwent a major change. As the country began to open to global cultural influences, tourism, and new forms of economic development, a number of artists began to liberate themselves from the constraints of the state-run academy system. Since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949, Soviet Realism and traditional Chinese styles had dominated the curriculum, the academies maintained exclusive control over what could be publicly exhibited, and official art magazines were virtually the only venues for approved art criticism and news reporting.
